Colon and Rectum Cancer

Colon and rectal cancer, unfortunately, is one of the most common. It mainly affects people over 50 years of age; however, it is increasingly common in younger patients.

There are multiple risk factors for its appearance: obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, alcoholism, a diet low in fiber and abundant in red and processed meats, a family history of colon and rectal cancer, genetic diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, among others.

Colon and rectal cancer symptoms

The patient may present blood through the rectum or with bowel movements, very dark bowel movements, abdominal or rectal pain, abdominal distention, altered bowel habits, weight loss, or a palpable tumor in either the abdomen or rectum. In case the patient has had blood studies, they may reflect anemia.

How is the diagnosis made?

The diagnosis should be suspected in any patient with these complaints. The doctor will carry out a complete medical history and a detailed physical examination and will request different complementary studies to make the diagnosis and if colon or rectal cancer is defined, to stage the patient (that is, determine how advanced the tumor is).

How is colon and rectal cancer treated?

Colon and rectal cancer treatment involves a complete medical team and the active participation of the patient. Once the clinical stage of the patient has been diagnosed and established, the doctor will offer a specific treatment depending on the location of the tumor, which may involve resection of the tumor (depending on the location and stage, minimally invasive surgery may be chosen), chemotherapy and in case of rectal cancer, radiotherapy.

In case you have any suspicious colorectal cancer discomfort, do not hesitate to go to an expert and trained doctor for a timely review and management.
