The most common cause of an anal fissure is a local trauma caused by constipation or diarrhea, which causes an excessive contraction of the anal sphincter with the consequent pain and bleeding. Other less common causes of an anal fissure are infections, inflammatory bowel disease, or tumors.

.

HOW IS AN ANAL FISSURE DIAGNOSED?

.

Diagnosis is made in the office, with a complete medical history that includes specific questions about the characteristics of pain and bowel habits, as well as the patient's medical history. The diagnosis is confirmed by a gentle physical examination, directly visualizing the anal fissure.

TREATMENT OF AN ANAL FISSURE

Treatment will depend on the time of evolution of the anal fissure. If an acute anal fissure is diagnosed promptly, medical management can be initiated with general hygienic-dietary measures, sitz baths, analgesics and specific local ointments. If the anal fissure is chronic, the success rate with medical management decreases gradually, so there may be the possibility of requiring a surgical intervention.

In case you have discomfort suggestive of an anal fissure, do not hesitate to go to an expert and trained doctor for its timely review and management.
